Tycho Jones’ tribute to the Notting Hill Carnival is a masterful take on dub and post-punk. The opening moments of ‘Carni’ are filled with thick bass and choppy guitar chords, before Jones’ voice builds in intensity and takes us into a brass-filled section centred on heavy jungle-esque drum patterns. On the inspiration behind the track, he explains that the Notting Hill Carnival “shows off everything that is amazing about London! All of London’s diverse multicultural communities coming together for Europe’s biggest street party. Carnival offers a true reflection of what it is to be a Londoner.” The UK live music scene might be sorely missed at the moment, but Jones has recreated its bounce quite impressively here. - Dan Peeke
